Make it-Take it Goes Global

Adult & community Education’s make It Take It Program
Has formed a partnership with The Joy & Care Giving Foundation of Bulacan, Phillippines. The mission of the program is to help bridge the digital divide between those I society who have access to technology and those who do not. The Joy & Care Giving Foundation is dedicated to helping schools in the Philippines improve the quality of education available to their students. The partnership was formed when approached MITI by Mrs. Jose Garcia, the founder of J&CGF.
MITI agreed to provide computers and training to various entities in the Philippines and In June team of volunteers made the trip. The group included Mrs. Jose Garcia, Ms. Veronica Maggs of MITI who provided the training, along with Mrs. Alison Lynch who assisted. Also along were Mrs. Jennifer Surgent, a professional photographer and Mr. Mike King who is writing a book on the experience. Mr. Ray Houston provided security for the group. Mr. Noel San Antonio who attended Villamoor High School in the Philippines and now lives in Palm Coast also made the trip.

The group took ten computers with them and is shipping more out to other elementary schools, an orphanage, and a juvenile detention center. Of all of these many facilities, only two had computers available. The ratio of machines to students was approximately 1 computer per thousand and those were often still using software Windows ’95.
Despite the lack of facilities where Ms. Maggs taught up to 60 students often with only one or two computers to use for demonstration, the students were eager to learn and gave their total attention to the classes.
Many had never seen a computer, though all had heard of the Internet wanted to learn more.

Thanks go out to the team of Volunteers from The Disabled American Veterans Chapter #86 who prepared the computers for this trip, which was sponsored in part by the Flagler County Rotary Club, and from a fund-raiser given by The Outback Steakhouse. The MITI Program hopes to offer ongoing support to the wonderful cause and if you would like to help in any way please contact Ms. Maggs at ( 386) 446-7612
